The North Ossetian State Medical Academy (NOSMA) is a premier institution for higher medical and pharmaceutical education in the Vladikavkaz region of North Ossetia. Established on July 10, 1939 as the North Ossetia Medical Institute in Vladikavkaz (formerly known as Ordzhonikidze), the academy has a rich history of medical education and research.
During World War II, in 1942, the medical institute was relocated to Yerevan city but was transferred back to Vladikavkaz in 1943. Over the years, the institution expanded its academic offerings, opening the Faculty of Paediatrics’ in 1974, the Faculty of Advanced Medicine in 1988, and the Dental Faculty in 1993. In 1995, the institute achieved the status of a medical academy, reflecting its growing importance and academic reputation.
Today, NOSMA trains over 3,000 students annually and is home to 7 faculties and 39 departments, staffed by 470 doctors and professors. The academy boasts a Central Research Laboratory, modern library facilities with electronic reading rooms, 21 computer classes, and centres for practical training and testing. NOSMA has made significant contributions to medical science, with its staff registering more than 100 innovations, receiving over 66 patents, and publishing 3,220 scientific papers.
